The European Wildlife Comeback Fund enhances the comeback of keystone species in Europe

July 16, 2024

The European Wildlife Comeback Fund (EWCF) is an innovative funding mechanism by Rewilding Europe aimed at supporting the translocation of keystone species across Europe, also those ones that are already in the final stages.

Wildlife reintroductions and population reinforcements are complicated and challenging processes that take a long time to organise. This often makes it difficult to match the availability of funding with the timing of releases. To overcome this challenge, Rewilding Europe’s European Wildlife Comeback Fund (EWCF) aims to provide immediate funding for wildlife translocations that are ready to proceed.

Rewilding Europe plans to award up to 50,000 euros per translocation for European initiatives, although requests for higher amounts will be considered if they are well justified.

The EWCF will prioritise the translocation of keystone species, where feasibility studies have been performed and permits and animals have already been secured. The fund can cover costs associated with the translocations themselves – particularly the purchase of animals and monitoring equipment, and transport expenses. It is not intended to cover preparatory activities, such as feasibility studies and work to obtain permits. If your organisation is working in wildlife reintroductions, you might be interested in applying.
